How to get certified with Anthropic: a step-by-step guide

A step-by-step guide for engineers: the Claude Partner Network learning path, the Claude Certified Architect exam, and how the credential opens doors to clients hiring certified architects.

If you are an engineer, this credential opens a new door. Companies are starting to hire specifically for certified Claude architects, and Anthropic now runs the official credential for exactly that: the Claude Certified Architect, Foundations. It is free, self-paced, and ends in a real technical exam. This guide walks you through the full path, from joining the Partner Network to passing the exam.

This is the same path Careminds is putting its own engineers through. Our first engineer is already certified, and we are working toward verified partner status. As we do, we route clients who want certified architects straight to the engineers who earned the credential. Here is exactly how it works.

Five-step roadmap to Claude certification

The short version

  • Cost: Free. Membership and the learning path cost nothing.
  • Format: Four self-paced courses, then a scenario-based exam.
  • Time: Plan for roughly 60 to 90 hours of study over a few months, depending on your starting point.
  • Outcome: The Claude Certified Architect, Foundations credential.

What it opens up for you as an engineer

The certification is not a wall decoration. It changes which clients you can reach and what you can charge.

Certified at a partner company versus not certified

  • A new pool of customers. A growing set of companies now screen for certified Claude architects. The credential is the keyword that gets you in front of them.
  • Independent proof, not a resume claim. Anyone can say they know Claude. A Certified Architect badge is verified by Anthropic, so clients do not have to take it on trust.
  • Pricing power. Verified, in-demand skills command higher rates than “I have used the API before.”
  • Careminds brings the customers. When clients come to us looking for certified engineers, we route that work to the people who hold the credential. Certification gets you on that list.

The strongest position is the combination: the credential opens the door, and a partner company brings the customers through it.

Step 1: Join the Claude Partner Network

The certification runs through Anthropic’s Claude Partner Network, a program Anthropic is backing with an initial $100 million in 2026 to help organizations bring Claude to enterprises.

Membership is free and open to any organization committed to deploying Claude. You apply once, and that membership unlocks the Partner Portal, the training materials, and the certification itself. Start at claude.com/partners.

Step 2: Open the learning path

Once you are in, head to the Claude Partner Network learning path on Anthropic Academy. You sign in with a Skilljar account, and no separate Anthropic account is needed to take the courses.

The path is the foundation for everything that follows. Treat it as the first step toward unlocking the exam, not an optional extra.

Step 3: Complete the four courses, in order

The learning path is four courses, deliberately sequenced so each one builds on the last. Take them in order.

The four courses in the Claude Partner Network learning path

#CourseWhat you learn
1Introduction to Agent SkillsBuild, configure, and share Skills in Claude Code: reusable markdown instructions Claude applies automatically.
2Building with the Claude APIThe full spectrum of working with Anthropic models: prompting, tool use, context management, and evaluations.
3Introduction to Model Context ProtocolBuild MCP servers and clients in Python, covering tools, resources, and prompts that extend what Claude can do.
4Claude Code in ActionIntegrate Claude Code into real development workflows to ship production work faster.

Do not skim. The exam tests whether you can apply this material to real problems, so the hands-on practice in each course is the actual preparation.

Step 4: Understand the exam before you sit it

The credential is the Claude Certified Architect, Foundations. It is aimed at solution architects building production applications with Claude, but the material is valuable for any engineer working with the API.

The Claude Certified Architect Foundations exam at a glance

What makes it different from a typical certification:

  • It is scenario-based, not multiple-choice trivia. The exam draws four scenarios at random from a set of six and asks you to make architectural decisions.
  • It tests judgment. You are graded on whether your design choices hold up, not on whether you memorized a definition.
  • There is a practice exam. Use it. Aim for a score above 900 out of 1000 before booking the real thing.

What the exam covers

The questions span the full lifecycle of building with Claude:

  • Claude API and application building
  • Prompt engineering
  • Tool use and orchestration
  • Context windows and context management
  • Evaluations and how to design them
  • Computer use
  • Claude Code and developer workflows
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP)
  • Enterprise deployment practices

Step 5: Pass the practice exam, then the live exam

Run the practice exam until you are consistently scoring above 900 out of 1000. That margin matters, because the live exam is scenario-driven and you want room for the questions that catch you off guard. When the practice scores are stable, sit the live certification.

That is it. Pass, and you hold the Claude Certified Architect, Foundations credential.

How long does it really take?

It depends entirely on where you start.

Starting pointRealistic timeline
Already build with the Claude API dailyA few weeks of focused review
Comfortable engineer, new to Claude1 to 2 months part-time
Newer to AI-assisted development3 to 4 months, 60 to 90 hours total

Anthropic has said more certifications for sellers, architects, and developers are coming later in 2026. Foundations is the one available now, and it is the right place to start.

Tips to pass on the first attempt

  • Build while you learn. Stand up a small project that uses the API, a tool call, and an MCP server. The exam rewards people who have actually shipped.
  • Learn to design evaluations. Evals come up across the material and are easy to underrate. Practice writing them.
  • Treat the practice exam as a diagnostic. Every question you miss points at a course section to revisit.
  • Do the courses in order. The sequence is intentional. Skipping ahead leaves gaps the scenarios will find.

Where Careminds fits

Getting certified is on you. Finding the clients who value it should not be. That is the part Careminds handles: we are moving our engineers through this exact path, our first is already certified, and we route clients who want certified architects to the engineers who earned the credential.
